Design Meta-Ethics

What happens if you switch the role of user and designer?

Design Meta-Ethics is an investigation into the philosophical foundation of Good, and it’s application to design. The installation, #CraigRobertsRoom, was a speculative design that switched the role of designer and user.

The audience of design, “users”, often are forced to use their limited attention economy absorbing content designed to provoke numerous emotions, without desiring or agreeing to it. #CraigRobertsRoom reversed the experience by allowing users to create the content that the designer is forced to consume. Through a sensory overloading experience, the designer learns the repercussions of their work and grows more empathetic toward users.

#CraigRobertsRoom is a collaboration of a variety of technologies. #CraigRobertsRoom’s interface was created using front-end code (HTML, JavaScript, etc) to allow for instantaneous interaction with the live stream of the content (the designer). #CraigRobertsRoom used hacked Philips Hue LED Lights to allow users to alter the environment of the content to best suit their message, and social media channels twitter and YouTube to put their content directly in the physical space.

The ability to see how design choices and messages effect users is the ideal process for designer. Allowing users to see the process nudges to them to think about their own spaces and the content they are forced to consume. The absurdity of having multiple messages coming from a variety of unidentified sources forces the designer reconsider the effects of their work.

User interfaces typically instantaneously affect a screen. #CraigRobertsRoom reminds both the user and designer that those screens are in physical spaces and that user interfaces have physical effects on the user’s environment.

Best of both worlds

Best of both worlds

#CraigRobertsRoom’s focus on both the user and designer helps in uncovering what Good Design truly is. Both the user and designer should be a part of the investigation and #CraigRobertsRoom ensures both parties can join the conversation.
